The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria on Monday said that between 800 and 1,500 women die out of 100,000 during childbirth.

It added that most of the deaths were caused by lack of access to antenatal care.

The Chairman of the NMCN, Mrs. Rebecca Aikhomu, who made this known in Ilorin, Kwara State, said that Nigerian women were still in the habit of using the traditional methods of childbirths at home and in the churches.

Speaking when she visited the Kwara State Governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Aikhomu called for the training and retraining of nurses and midwives to reduce the rate of deaths during pregnancy and childbirth.

She said the rate of maternal mortality in the country had increased to about 40 per cent deaths as against the 15 per cent death average.

Aikhomu noted that the council which was established under Decree 8(9) of 1979 was saddled with the responsibility of ensuring effective and quality service delivery in the country.

She appealed to governments at all levels to assist by employing more nurses so that the rate at which pregnant women died would be reduced to the barest minimum.

In his comments, Saraki stated that he had concluded arrangements to ensure that he supported the council to put an end to the cases of child mortality nationwide.

He said, “No state will allow its women and children to continue to die as a result of lack of nurses and other essential requirements for the provision of quality health care system.”

Saraki added that no fewer than 500 nurses would be employed by the state government, adding that those who retired will also be considered to tap from their wealth of experience.
