Actress, Thelma Okoduwa, talks about her career, marriage and new project

What have you been up to lately?
I’ve been working on the new Africa Magic TV series called Hush, and that has been quite hectic. The series is about politics, fashion, and love. It is very exciting and intriguing. This is the only thing I’m doing at the moment because the series is time-consuming. I’ve been doing it for about six months. I started in January, and I’m on set almost every day. I decided to work on Hush, because Africa Magic is a good platform for me to move to the next level.

Why did you take a break from Nollywood?
I was away from Nollywood for a while because I got married, and I was making babies. I was in Abuja trying to make a home, and also take care of my children. While I was there, I was also working but you know it is not like being in  Lagos, which is the hub of entertainment in Nigeria. After I got married, I felt that my family should come first and I didn’t want to get it wrong. I wanted to be the best mum to my children, and give them the best foundation.

How have been able to strike a balance between your career and marriage?
I have a very supportive husband who is always there for me. I also get support from my sisters and nanny. They all give me the assistance that I need. I am from a large but close-knit family. My parents pampered  us while we were growing up. I am a God-fearing and hard-working woman. I love life, and I love my family so much. My family is the most important thing in my life. I don’t mess with my family.

Did you plan to become an actress?
I have a diploma in Theatre Arts, and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. I actually got into acting through a close friend of mine. It was not planned. It just happened, and like they say, the rest is history. I got into acting in the year 2000. It has been rough and exciting. Acting for me has been quite a journey.

Do you think Nollywood has gotten better?
The industry is getting bigger gradually and steadily. It is going on to the next level. Nobody ever imagined that it would be this big. I believe it will be bigger than this soon.

Who are your role models?
I look up to Joke Silva, and I love RMD. I think RMD has an awesome personality on and off screen. He is a humble man.

What is the most challenging role you have played?
I’d say the role of Arinola Cardoso in Hush. My role in the series is that of someone who has a character that is completely opposite of who I am. I had to be tough, and I’m not a tough person in real life. Unlike Arinola, I’m a lovable person. That made the role a bit difficult.

How do you like to dress?
Style for me has to do with comfort. I wear whatever makes me comfortable. I don’t follow trends. My favourite designer in Nigeria, is Lanre Da Silva Ajayi.

What do you do in your spare time?
When I have the time, I sleep. I also love spending time with my children. I love taking them out. I have two children; my daughter is six and my son is four. I just take things a day at a time, and  I don’t worry about  things that I cannot change.
