Mauricio Pochettino’s side ran riot against Gillingham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, scoring five without reply and will be looking to make it three leagune wins on the bounce against Boro.
The home side have found life back in the top tier tough after a promising start and come into the clash on the back of successive league defeats and with just five points from five games.
It may be one of lesser attractions of a weekend packed with action, but this one should at least give us goals with both sides a good bet for a strike or two and Spurs with ten goals in their last four games.
It’s a big game for… Vincent Janssen.
Vincent Janssen has to take over from Harry Kane with the star striker injured
The Dutchman has yet to take off for Tottenham since making a big money move in the summer, but will have to step up in the predicted long-term absence of Harry Kane.
Janssen did himself a world of good midweek with his first goal for the club and will want to prove he is the man to lead from the front.
Kane’s ankle injury will give the striker an extended run in Pochettino’s side and Janssen will want to convince his manager that he is money well spent and up for the challenge.
Likely starting elevens…
Injuries permitting, Pochettino should return to full strength this weekend.
Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele are carrying knocks, while Heung-Min Son could keep his place ahead of Erik Lamela, but Christian Eriksen should be in the side after two goals midweek.
One thing is for sure, Janssen will start the game in Kane’s absence and will probably lead the line for the first time in the Premier League this season.
Boro boss Aitor Karanka has almost a fully fit squad to pick from with the return of Jordan Rhodes and Cristhian Stuani from injury.
Stuani should come straight back into the side, but Karanka may be tempted to stick with almost the same side that lost to Everton.
A 2009 meeting at White Hart Lane turned into a brutal visit for Boro who were hit for four goals.
Not a single player at Tottenham that featured in that game are still at the club, but Boro do have a player that appeared on the night.
In his first spell with Boro, Stewart Downing was on the field that night, but could do nothing to stop the rout.
From the archives…
There some cracking goals in this game, including a stunning freekick from one Jermaine Jenas.
And 83rd minute equalsier from Egyptian striker Mido saved a point for Tottenham in a thrilling game at Riverside. More of the same please.
