Nigerian security forces have arrested 24 people accused of stealing crude oil and illegally refining it, "The suspects were arrested in Gokana local government area by officers of JTF in a special operation.

The arrests took place last week and the suspects are to be handed over to an anti-graft agency, EFCC for prosecution

Since last November, JTF has destroyed more than 1,000 illegal "refineries" in Gokana, in the southeast of the oil-rich Rivers State, some located in people's homes.

He said the refineries use crude technologies that did not meet industrial standards, sold to members of the public, these refined petroleum products can cause potentially dangerous car engine malfunctions

Gokana is part of Ogoniland, a local community that campaigns against the damaging effects of foreign oil exploration and exploitation on the local eco-system.
