Tottenham travel to Vicarage Road on New Year's Day aiming to close the gap to their top-four rivals.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are just one point adrift of the Champions League places, having recovered from an early setback to ease past Southampton on Wednesday night.

The north Londoners will be installed as clear favourites against Walter Mazzarri's side, who have lost four of their last six top-flight fixtures, but can ill-afford not to secure a positive result.

A London derby against Chelsea is on the horizon but Spurs must stay focused as they look to keep pace with those above them in the table. Overlooking the Hornets could lead to a nasty sting in the tail.

TEAM NEWS
Erik Lamela is still struggling to shake off a hip injury but Mousa Dembele is available, which has been something of a rarity this season.

Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are suspended for accumulating five bookings.

Pochettino's biggest selection dilemma involves his formation with Toby Alderweireld a doubt due to a virus.

The Argentine coach deployed his side with a three-man defence at Vicarage Road last season and could opt for a similar approach, despite the fact Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney are no longer firing on all cylinders.

Moussa Sissoko will be hopeful he has done enough to secure another starting berth.

Watford, meanwhile, are short of options. Daryl Janmaat and Valon Behrami were both withdrawn during the recent draw against Crystal Palace nursing knocks. Stefano Okaka is also an early doubt.
