* Liverpool 0-1 Southampton (Agg 0-2): Uninspired Reds crash out of League Cup

* Celta 2-2 Real Madrid (agg. 4-3): Merengue dumped out of the Copa del Rey with draw

Liverpool fired blanks as they fell 1-0 at home against Southampton in the second-leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday courtesy of Shane Long's dramatic late winner.

The Reds thus bowed out of the tournament 2-0 on aggregate after trailing 1-0 from the game at St Mary's Stadium, though Jurgen Klopp fielded Daniel Sturridge alongside Philippe Coutinho up front from the start as he attempted to claw back a result.

However, the Premier League title contenders failed to fire in front of goal, with Sturridge guilty of missing arguably Liverpool's best chance of the game on the hour mark.

Southampton had their own share of chances to build on their previous win through Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic, and Long struck a fantastic effort at the death to seal a deserved result.

Meanwhile, a Huh? blistering free-kick effort from Cristiano Ronaldo was not enough to avoid another damaging defeat for Real Madrid, as Celta held on for a  2-2 draw to dump the Merengue out of the Copa del Rey.
