As the nation awaits the constitution of a new federal cabinet, following Wednesday’s dissolution of the Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF) by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, some governors have concluded plans to ensure that President Umar Musa Yar’Adua’s loyalists return to power.

Saturday Sun gathered that some governors, especially the core Yar’Adua supporters, met yesterday and agreed to nominate loyalists of President Umar Yar’Adua as ministers, in order to protect the interest of the ailing president.

It was learnt that the governors want to ensure that their principal does not lose out completely, even when Jonathan is in charge, reasoning that the only way to achieve this is to have his supporters in the federal cabinet.

The governors are said to have resolved that the three nominees they would send to Jonathan would be associates of Yar’Adua, so that head or tail they win.
Already, most of them are said to have relocated to Abuja to ensure that their nominees are not dropped from the list to be submitted to the Senate next week.
Apart from protecting the interest of the ailing president, it was gathered that most of governors are fighting for their political survival, as they are not sure of re-election in 2011 with Jonathan in the saddle. They, therefore, want to use their nominees to serve as counter force.

Saturday Sun, however, gathered that some of the governors are facing stiff opposition from members of the National Assembly from their respective states, who are also pushing for their candidates. The legislators are believed to be waiting to stop any nominee who would not serve their interest in next year’s elections.
Sources said that Jonathan has his own agenda, as he reportedly told his associates that he would scrutinise the nominees from the governors to avoid appointing people who would undo him.
