No fewer than 1,520 couples were joined in marriage across the 44 local Government areas of Kano State yesterday, in a state-sponsored mass wedding.

Kano State instituted mass wedding in 2011 with full sponsorship that guarantees payment of dowry and free furniture.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who attended the decentralised mass wedding at Kano Central Mosque, where 40 couples were  joined, paid N20,000 dowries for each of the 1,520 widows, divorcees and spinsters.

The wedding that was solemnised by the Chief Imam of Kano Central Mosque, Professor Sani Zaharadeen, was witnessed by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and thousands of Muslim faithful.

Governor Ganduje said the state will now regulate marriages to sanitise the institution. He said that the state government and Islamic scholars would come up with a document which would be presented to the state Assembly.

Ganduje added that the mass wedding was aimed at combating rising rates of divorce, births out of wedlock and the number of impoverished widows and divorcees in the state.

He also decried the high rate of divorce and domestic violence.

“A situation where you have domestic violence and women are beaten, sometimes beaten to death; this cannot continue,” he said.

Also speaking during the ceremony, the Commandant, Kano Hisbah Board, Alhaji Aminu Daurawa, revealed that the successful couples were certified fit for the exercise after they were subjected to series of tests.

Sheik Aminu Daurawa disclosed that each couple was exposed to HIV test by his board, evidence of economic and financial well-being of the grooms certified and clearance from the Ward Head that vouched for their impeccable character.

Sheik Daurawa declared that under the conditions that qualifies grooms to participate in the mass wedding was a clause that guarantees “for better or worse.”

He said: “Hisbah board does not condone divorce under this arrangement and would seek redress in court in event of violation. You are simply married till death do you part.”
