The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday delivered the much awaited judgment on the killing of six traders in Apo, Abuja by policemen on 7 June 2005. The trial judge, Justice Ishaq Bello, today found two accused persons – Ezekiel Acheneje and Baba Emmanuel – guilty for their roles in the killing of six Igbo traders in 2005, thereby convicting the two men – former police officers – to death for culpable homicide.

Apo six vitcims: 2 policemen get death sentence, 3 freed
Apart from the two policemen, who were sentenced to death, three others – Danjuma Ibrahim, Nicholas Zakariah and Sadiq Salami – were discharged, in the judgment delivered today.
NAN reports that the five were among the six arraigned over the killing of the traders  on suspicion that they were armed robbers.

The sixth person on the charge sheet, Othman Abdulsalam, who was the Divisional Police Officer in Apo, is on the run. The accused persons were arraigned on a nine-count charge of conspiracy and culpable homicide, which contravened the provisions of Sections 97 and 221 (a) of the Penal Code Law.
Their victims were young traders, including a woman, aged between 21 and 25. They were: Ifeanyi Ozor, Chinedu Meniru, Isaac Ekene, Paulinus Ogbonna, Anthony Nwodike and a female Augustina Arebun.

The defendants allegedly played different parts in the killing of the victims while they were returning from a night party on 7 June 2005 in Abuja. Following their deaths and the subsequent public outcry, an official panel of inquiry was set up by ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration to unravel the plot.

What is good in this judgement or about this judgement? The major players have been let off the hook because they are highly connected and the errand boys are sacrificed. I am sure the DPO who ran away will be regretting it now because if he had remained, he would have also been discharged and acquitted.  This judgement should be appealed. I will apply for a certified true copy of the judgement and publish it online. After all it is a public document.
