Married men 'live longer because wives nag them to visit doctor'
Married men may live longer because their wives nag them to visit the doctor when something is wrong, according to new research.
Men who are hitched are six per cent more likely to go for a check up than single men, the study found.
It also claimed that men and women who are in relationships are more likely to do regular exercise.
Women are 34 per cent more likely to keep fit if they are in a relationship while men are 20 per cent more likely to go out for a run once a week if they were married.
Health conscious women are just as likely to go to the doctor regardless of whether they are married or single.
Hendrik Schmitz, of Germany’s Ruhr Graduate School in Economics, who conducted the study, told The Daily Mail: "If a woman goes to the doctor, the likelihood of her partner also visiting the doctor increases by 6 percentage points."
"But if the man visits the doctor, this does not seem to affect the woman’s behaviour. An individual who is in a relationship usually wants the partner in good health because they care for them."
The study will be presented at the Royal Economic Society’s annual conference at the University of Surrey.
