Bayern Munich welcome Scottish champions Celtic to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening in what will be coach Jupp Heynckes’ first UEFA Champions League game since lifting the trophy with the Bavarians in 2013 (kick-off: 20:45 CEST/18:45 GMT).

Heynckes replaced Carlo Ancelotti as coach on 6 October, and got off to a flying start in his first game back in the Bayern dugout on Saturday, with the record Bundesliga champions roaring past Freiburg 5-0. Kingsley Coman, Thiago Alcantara, Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich were each on target, and Bayern’s perfect day got even better in the evening kick-off, with RB Leipzig’s 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund leaving second-place Bayern just two points off BVB’s table-topping pace. Javi Martinez – a Heynckes favourite when Bayern did the treble of Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Champions League in 2013 – picked up a shoulder injury, though, and is a doubt for the Celtic clash. He joins Manuel Neuer and Franck Ribery on the sidelines.

Celtic – like Bayern – have beaten Anderlecht but lost to Paris Saint-Germain so far in this season’s competition, whilst they lead Aberdeen on goal difference at the top of the Scottish Premiership. The Glaswegians remain overwhelming underdogs against Bayern, however, and that’s before accounting for the injury-enforced absence of their captain, Scott Brown.

Probable line-ups

Bayern: Ulreich – Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Alaba – Rudy, Thiago – Robben, Müller, James, Lewandowski
Absentees: Neuer (foot), Ribery (knee), Bernat (ankle), Vidal (match fitness), Martinez (shoulder)
Coach: Jupp Heynckes

Celtic: Gordon – Lustig, Biton, Boyata, Tierney – McGregor, Ntcham – Forrest, Roberts, Sinclair – Griffiths
Absentees: Brown, Armstrong, Simunic (all knee), Ralston (knock), Rogic (international duty)
Coach: Brendan Rodgers
