As Anthony Joshua makes his last-minute preparations for his world titles’ defence against Carlos Takam, traditional worshippers in his’ home-town of Sagamu have kicked off special sacrifices for him. Joshua will on Saturday, October 28 take on Cameroonian-born Takam to defend his WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles.
Millions of miles away from the Principality Stadium in Cardiff where the fight will hold, some traditional worshippers in Sagamu are doing all they can to help Joshua beat Takam. Shagamu, a city located in Ogun State, in south-western Nigeria is the ancestral village of the Nigerian-born British boxer.
Although born in Watford, the boxer's parents Robert and Yeta are both from Sagamu.
We learnt that traditional worshippers in Sagamu who practise the Ifá religion kicked off a special sacrifice for their son ahead of his fight on Saturday. According to a  source in Sagamu, the worshippers started the sacrifice on Thursday, October 26 two days before the fight on Saturday. “The worshippers have started a fire which will burn until after the fight,” the source told us
Sagamu indigenes came out in full to support Anthony Joshua during his last fight (Kwese Sports) The indigenes of Sagamu regard Joshua as one of their own. For his last fight, his knockout win against Wladimir Klitschko in April 2017, hundreds of people attended a view party which was organised by the Sagamu Youth Association.  His win over Klitschko was hugely celebrated in the town. Joshua is very much in touch with his Nigerian roots and still bears the middle name, 'Oluwafemi’.
