An 18-year-old girl from Brooklyn identified as Gabrielle Canales has been bashed on social media for stealing from an Uber driver.
Gabrielle Canales, who calls herself Gabita on social media, was identified on Tuesday after footage of her stealing cash from driver Mohammed H. Bhuiyan's tip jar in August went viral.
She was captured on camera in August 12 reaching into his jar and snatching his cash as she got out of the car with two friends. The footage went viral on Tuesday after reappearing online but Canales was remorseless and appeared to revel in her newfound infamy.
She shared screenshots of news articles about it on Instagram and Snapchat and said she 'only' took $5 from the man which she claims to have returned later.
Before getting into his car, she posed in her underwear in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, for two Instagram pictures. The young girl is believed to have grown up in Central Islip, New York.
A third photo showed her still wearing the mustard-colored skirt she had on in the Uber. She deleted all three photos from August 12 on Tuesday afternoon where her identity went public.
Canales was filmed coyly glancing towards the driver's camera before making off with the money in the August 12 video. By the time he realized it was gone, she and her two friends had left the car.
According to the driver who drove the trio on the same day, Uber dropped the matter when they contacted Canales and she denied ever stealing the money. They told him take the matter to police if he wanted to pursue it further but the man says he was too busy.
Uber has since contacted him again to offer him more support and have banned Canales from using the app.
