As the saying goes, “It is right to eat, but it is wrong to eat too much”. Eating helps a lot, but too much of it endangers health, medical experts have affirmed.
Study shows that the reason why people crave for large food portion in the first place is because of the availability of large portions of food. The study went further to state that, “In a world where food is ever-present, many of us have become like Alice in Wonderland, controlled by cakes that say: “Eat Me” and bottles that say: “Drink Me,” which explains that a person faced with a large portion of food has a high tendency of eating much.
Similarly, A Public Health Physician, Professor Bayo Onajole, said that, when people are in a happy or festive mood, they will likely eat more food.
Buttressing this point, another study on Nutrition and Dietetics stated,
Quote
“Buffets can also be problematic because there is a seemingly endless supply of food and no limit on the amount of servings you can have. Where there is increased variety, calorie intake increases because you will want to taste a little of everything, and then eat more of the things you really like, leading you to eat more than you would have if you only chose to eat two or three items.”

Speaking on the negative impact of eating large portion of food, Onajole said,
Quote
“When you take in more food than you ought to, it will definitely affect your health,”
either immediately or a long time.
He said that the immediate effect could be discomfort and sometimes, it could lead to diarrhoea, especially in a case whereby the food is infected.
Onajole added that too much intake of fatty or sweet food can lead to over secretion of fats and when there is more secretion of fats in the body, it could be a precursor to hypertension and diabetes.
Another study reveals that
Quote
“Larger portions of the same healthy foods can more than double the total number of calories, leading to potential weight gain if you are not burning or expending more calories than you are ingesting.”

Onajole, however explained that these effects differ as it depends on the kind of food that is taken and the state of health of the individual concerned.
In his words, “the health effect that could result would depend on the actual nutrient that is in excess and how the body metabolises that excessive intake.”
He also explained that malnutrition, as it is being expressed by a lot of people does not only entail that people are not taking enough, but also encompass people taking more than necessary.
In order to avert such drastic effect, the public health physician advised that people should embrace moderation in food consumption. He said,
Quote
“Moderation is the key word. Don’t wait until you have consumed excess food, which sometimes, can lead to irreversible organ damage. So it’s better to prevent than to cure it.”
Also,a Public Health Physician, Dr. Ibrahim Ogunbi said excessive eating affects the liver negatively and does not give the consumer a peaceful night. He added, “The person won’t be able to sleep at night.”

He explained that cutting down on food portion is a healthy option for the human body.
Quote
It makes the brain to work and act very actively because eating too much can have negative effect on cognitive function. Similarly, it hurts memory and impairs decision making,
Ogunbi added.
