Shakhtar Donetsk take a slender advantage into their Champions League last 16 second leg at Roma.

The Ukranian champions had to do it the hard way three weeks ago in Kharkiv.

Hitting back from a goal down to nick a 2-1 first leg victory has set the tie up just nicely.

Roma went ahead when Cengiz Under forced past keeper Andriy Pyatov after a tidy cross from Edin Dzeko.

Facundo Ferreyra controlled and finished well for the equaliser.

And Fred threatened to burst the net with his 71st-minute goal that ensured the hosts won on the night.

Shakhtar haven’t lost in yonks and have won three on the bounce domestically without conceding a goal since the first leg.

Vorskla were the most recent recipients of a 3-0 tonking as Shakhtar streak away at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League.

Roma are steady away in third place in Serie A, albeit with no hope of overhauling Napoli and Juventus above them.

Kostas Manolas, Daniele de Rossi and Lorenzo Pellegrini scored the second half goals on Friday as Torino were put to the sword.

Even more impressive was the previous weekend’s 4-2 thrashing of aforementioned table-toppers Napoli.

But it’s the Champions League that still presents the biggest realistic opportunity for drama this season for both sides.

With a place in the last eight up for grabs, Roma will be hoping to cash in on their potentially valuable away goal at the Stadio Olimpico.
