The Northern Christian Elders Forum on Saturday flayed Northern governors over the call that the issue of indigeneship in Plateau State be de-emphasized for peace to reign in the troubled state.

The position of the governors, the NOCEF said, was hypocritical as it would not return peace to the state.

The NOCEF stated this just as the Christian Association of Nigeria in the 19 Northern states and Abuja again urged the Federal Government to immediately replace the General Officer Commanding 3rd Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos, Maj-Gen. Sale Maina.

CAN which also raised the fresh alarm over alleged marginalisation of Christians in some major Federal establishments in the north, warned that unless Maina was removed secret killings in Plateau would continue.

But the NOCEF Chairman, Evang. Matthew Owojaiye, in a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Saturday, insisted that some of the states particularly, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Zamfara, Sokoto and Bauchi had no moral justification to call on Plateau State to de-emphasize indigeneship.

The forum, which urged the Plateau State government not to accept the proposal said, "We note with joy the advice given to the Plateau State government by the Northern governors at the end of their recent meeting in Jos, that the government of Plateau State should de-emphasis indigeneship so that there would be peace in the state."

The Northern CAN in its communique issued at the end of its meeting in Kaduna on Saturday, alleged that there was a grand plan to exclude Northern Christians from appointments in some key Federal Government parastatals and institutions, especially in places like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the Nigerian Defence Academy, the army as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

The Christian body therefore called on Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to take immediate steps to address the injustice.

Reading the communiqué, the Secretary of the Northern CAN, Saidu Dogo, alleged that the current situation was part of the plot by some powerful political forces to ensure the continued domination and marginalization of Northern Christians.

Buttressing the claim with statistics of the appointments in the Nigerian Army as at 2009, Dogo stated that the majority of the top echelon of the Army were Muslims from the North, while the NNPC and the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja were similarly dominated.
