Real Madrid have named Spain manager Julen Lopetegui as their new head coach on a three-year deal.

Lopetegui, who will lead Span during this summer’s World Cup, will replace Zinedine Zidane who left the club last week after leading them to three successive Champions League titles.

The 51-year-old will take up the reins at the Santiago Bernabeu after the World Cup, which begins on 14 June.

A former goalkeeper, Lopetegui made one senior appearance for Real Madrid but played 107 matches for Logrones.

He made his bones as a coach with Portuguese side FC Porto, before taking over at the Spanish national team in July 2016, succeeding Vicente del Bosque.

His immediate task at Real will be to mount a strong challenge for La Liga after Los Blancos finished third last season, 17 points behind champions Barcelona.

Spain begin their World Cup campaign with a blockbuster clash against neighbours and reigning European champions Portugal on Friday.
