A suspected smuggler’s vehicle was Sunday night reported having crushed a middle-aged man to death along Abeokuta-Ibadan expressway and injured a mother of three children.
the survivor, the mother of three, is presently at the emergency unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan where she is receiving treatment.
It was gathered that the accident, which caused a commotion on the single lane expressway, occurred near Eleso town, a suburb of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
An eyewitness, who spoke with journalists on Monday, disclosed that the car suspected to be smuggler’s car was coming from Abeokuta when it collided with a commercial motorcycle which was coming from Omi Adio.
He said that the victim, who was crushed to death by the car, was later identified as Ogba. Ogba was said to have had his first child last two months.
The source added that the ill-fated vehicle, an Opel saloon car, was loaded with 24 bags of 50kg smuggled rice when the accident occurred. This, according to him, made the residents of the area suspect that the car belongs to smugglers.
The driver of the vehicle, who escaped unhurt, was said to have been detained at the Omi-Adio police station, Ibadan on Sunday.
The driver of the vehicle with registration number Ogun WDE 672 XA was said to have lost control on a bend and somersaulted several times before crashing into the commercial motorcycle which was carrying a passenger.
many aggrieved youths at the scene of the accident attempted to burn the vehicle but were prevented by some elders at the scene.
However, the aggrieved youths succeeded in destroying some of the bags of the imported rice before some policemen towed the vehicle, the motorcycle and remaining bags of rice to the police station.
It was gathered that the remains of the deceased commercial motorcyclist, which was lying in front of the police station since Sunday night, has been retrieved by the family for burial Monday afternoon.
However, all efforts made to get the Police spokesman in the state, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu to speak on the matter since yesterday proved abortive as calls put through to his telephone line were unsuccessful.
