Kaduna State government yesterday evening declared a 24-hour curfew in two communities on the outskirts of the Kaduna metropolis.

The communities are Kwaru and Ungwan Yero both in Kaduna North Local Government Area. It was learnt that trouble started when a young man from Kwaru community allegedly belonging to a gang which had members from both communities was found dead at the weekend in Ungwa-Yero.

Members of his community were said to have accused their neighbours of being behind his death, leading to rising tension and a mob action that led to the death of a cobbler, Benjamin Ali, from the Ungwa-Yero community. The two communities were said to have been spoiling for war since then. Governor Nasir el-Rufai visited the area and called for calm, while declaring a partial curfew.

During the visit, the governor assured the families that the law enforcement agencies had been directed to thoroughly investigate the killings, and to prosecute those involved. He appealed to the residents of the communities to reject division in the name of religion or ethnicity, and to uphold harmony in the area. However, tension was said to have been heightened yesterday evening following the burial of the victim of the mob action.

Consequently, government was forced to extend the curfew to 24 hours. Security operatives have also been drafted to the area to forestall the breakdown of law and order. The spokesman for the governor, Samuel Aruwan, announced the curfew in a statement.

The statement reads in part: “The Kaduna State government has declared an indefinite 24-hour curfew on the feuding communities in Kwaru and Ungwan-Yero. This extends the 7a.m. to 7p.m. curfew earlier imposed on these neighbouring communities in Kaduna North Local Government.

“The decision was taken after review of the security situation in the communities. “Residents of the two communities are enjoined to comply with the directives, as security agencies have been directed to vigorously enforce the curfew.”
