Manchester United broke the record for the youngest player to feature in the Uefa Youth League today when they fielded 14-year-old Shola Shoretire.

The youngster came on with quarter of an hour to play in United Under-19s’ clash against Valencia in the ‘junior Champions League’ which was founded in 2013.

He helped his side close out a well-fought 2-1 victory in Spain after falling behind early to Jordi Escobar’s goal.

But Nicky Butt’s young Red Devils came back and scored twice within five minutes before the break to turn the game on its head.

Nishan Burkart got the equaliser before Aidan Barlow slotted in to put United in front and it proved to be the match winner despite Valencia leading the shot count 18-8.

It means Manchester United top Group H with five wins and a draw, scoring an impressive 20 goals – only Ajax managed more.

Shoretire, who can play across the midfield, replaced goalscorer Burkart despite his tender age of 14 years and 314 days.

The winger has already been called up to an U23 training camp in Austria over the summer, with Man United coaches describing Shoretire as an ‘exceptional talent‘, and has now taken the next step on what looks to be a promising career.

Shoretire has trained with England youth sides in recent years but is also eligible to play international football for Nigeria.
