In a coy political move, Raymond Dokpesi, the proprietor of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Campaign Manager of the flagging presidential campaign of former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, has sued Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS).
Dokpesi was briefly interrogated by the SSS last week in connection with the double car-bombings in Abuja during the October 1 independence anniversary event at Eagle Square. Yesterday, it was learned that Dokpesi had made a dramatic appearance at the Federal High Court building in Abuja, to file a lawsuit to tie the hands of the SSS from further harassing or arresting him in connection with the blasts, which killed scores of Nigerians. Dokpesi’s brief arrest helped raise the political temperature in Nigeria. As usual, Dokpesi's principal, Ibrahim Babangida, sought to take advantage of the arrest and subsequent bungling of the bomb blast investigations by the Goodluck Jonathan regime to attempt to prolong his political relevance by creating division between Nigerians in the North and South.
He joined three other People’s Democratic Party hopefuls: Atiku Abubakar, Aliyu Gusau and Bukola Saraki, in drafting a public statement criticizing Jonathan.
Babangida, a perennially divisive figure, revels in creating acrimony and bitterness among Nigerians, the most damaging of which he engineered in the late 80's and early 90's. He is best remembered for his 1993 annulment of Nigeria's freest election in history.
That event is partly responsible for the political mess in Nigeria today, but it has also thrown impossible hurdles in his way as he has found he cannot gather any serious momentum for his blind ambition. Recently, as his political frustration has grown, he unleashed propaganda on pro-democracy activists agitating against his re-emergency, claiming that they were mainly fighting for the interest of the Southwest. Also, recently, when he found it difficult to convince anyone about his viability as a presidential candidate, he went to the Southeast where he promised some politicians that he will only spend four years in power and then hand over to an "Easterner of Igbo Descent" to rule Nigeria for another 8 years, a clear signal he has neither read the Nigerian constitution, nor understands that it is not run according to military edicts or individual manipulation.
I specialize in investigative reportage across several subject matter and sectors but mainly focus on metro events and investigation. Do leave your thoughts and opinion on my reports to let me know what you think about them. Thank you
