The school children numbering about six from Humani Alaga Secondary School were about to cross the Mokola-Ojoo road when they were hit by one of the vehicles used by the smugglers while trying to escape the “police pin-down point” on the road.
Four of them were lucky while the two who were from the same parents were not as one was killed and the other injured.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that trouble started at about 7.15 a.m, when some armed riot policemen on duty at a pin-down point on the road attempted to stop a four-vehicle convoy suspected to belong to smugglers of used vehicles popularly called Tokunbo.
Three of the smugglers were said to be driving on top speed against the traffic at the time of the incident.
An eyewitness, Mr. Ismaila Emiola, told the Nigerian Tribune that when it became obvious that the suspects would not stop, the policemen started shooting.
In an attempt to escape, Emiola said one of the vehicles in the convoy of the suspected smugglers hit two boys who were crossing the road on the way to their school.
One of the boys later identified as Opeyemi died on the spot, while the other was said to have had a fracture on one of his arms.Their ages were put at six and nine.
The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Ms. Olabisi Okuwobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident.
She said that investigation was still ongoing.
