Pirates’ attack on the Yenagoa-Brass-Akassa waterway in Bayelsa State has left four persons dead and several others wounded.

Survivors of the attack on a passenger boat told our correspondent that victims were forced to jump over board at gun point after pillaging the boat and taking away the outboard engine.

It was gathered on Tuesday that the victims were artisans that had gone to work in Akassa and therefore had no money or goods when the pirates attacked the boat.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that since the closure of the militant camps on the fringe of the Atlantic Ocean, particularly on the Brass-Akassa route, there had been an upsurge in piracy.

A number of merchant boats had been attacked and traders dispossessed of valuables.

The major source of concern among voyagers, however, is the viciousness of the pirates who force passengers to jump into the water.

The State Secretary of a non governmental organisation, Environmental Rights Action, Mr. Morris Alagoa, who has monitored activities in the waterways said there was need for prompt action by the government and the security agencies.

“Travellers are not only apprehensive with the development; their lives are really in danger. There is need for protection from governments at all levels,” he said.

The ERA chief advised the government to direct the youths engaged in the Bayelsa volunteers security scheme to patrol the waterways.

“They should be given the task of patrolling the creeks with the security agents to check the activities of these criminals wasting the lives of innocent and law-abiding Nigerians,” he said.

Alagoa said he had been shocked by the reports of floating bodies in the creeks.

The ERA chief called on federal and state governments, the Niger Delta Development Commission and the Niger Delta Ministry to ensure that coastal communities were linked up with roads.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eguavon Emokpae, confirmed the attack, saying that the matter was under investigation.
