Speaking to aviation correspondents at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, Mrs. Robinson stated that for Africa to move forward into a brighter future, there was the need for her to put in more efforts in tackling corruption and promoting the Rule of Law, adding that countries in Africa would only prosper according to the policy of good and accountable governance.
She said: “I think that countries determine their own future, and this is a good moment for Nigeria because you are marking a very special anniversary and that is a very good time to take stock and make proper use of potentials at your disposal.“
Mrs. Robinson, however, noted that Africa had been making progress, especially from the economic point of view, adding that there was still a myriad of challenges facing the continent.
She noted that until those challenges were addressed, the prospect of Africa for a brighter future would still be dwindling.
Makes case for women in politics
She encouraged Nigerian government to further create room for greater participation of women in politics, noting that her election as the first female President of Ireland brought stability and progress to the political landscape of her country.
She said Ireland and Nigeria had always had a friendly and bilateral relationship in various areas of interest, adding that such relationship was a major catalyst in boosting economic growth across the world.
She said: “My country has very friendly relationship with Nigeria in all areas: economic, in education, in healthcare, and other vital areas.
“While in Nigeria, I will also be meeting with the Irish Ambassador and some Irish businessmen, because they have been here in Nigeria for a very long time educating the poorest people here in Nigeria. I am very proud of that.”
