THE Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Baba Adisa Bolanta, has warned Senator Lekan Balogun against his threat to organise an unlawful protest, saying that he will be arrested and prosecuted if he goes ahead.
Speaking with journalists in his office, on Wednesday, in a reaction to a story published in a national daily (not the Nigerian Tribune), which was credited to Senator Balogun, Bolanta told him that he was not immune to criminal prosecution.

“He should not test the will of the police in maintaining public order. His statement amounts to incitement of the public against lawfully-constituted authority,” Bolanta said.

On the allegation that the state police command had summoned some notable politicians in the state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the clash in Ogbomoso between factions loyal to Senator Rashidi Ladoja and Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, Bolanta said there had been no letter of invitation to any of those mentioned by Balogun, neither had anyone made a report of them, either written or verbal, to the police.

On the call for his redeployment, Bolanta said that he was not afraid, as it was a routine exercise in the police.

“We can see that the person heating up the polity is the one that cries wolf where there is none,” he said.

The police boss said Senator Balogun was only being economical with the truth on the case of assault and assassination which he alleged the police did not act upon.

On the reinstatement of Alhaji Lateef Oluwatoki (Tokyo) as the state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bolanta said he gave the bailiff from the National Industrial Court 30 mobile policemen on August 7 to execute the judgment of the court, contrary to Senator Balogun’s claim that he did not carry out the order.

Also referring to issue of procurement of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) by the state government, Mr Bolanta said the APCs bought by the Oyo State government were just like those procured by the Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, which were meant for personnel protection with no military application.

According to Bolanta, “the Oyo State governor has not asked me to do anything wrong or prevent anyone from holding political meetings. Loyalty is not against our professional ethics. The governor is the chief security officer of the state. If Senator Balogun becomes the governor and I am the commissioner of police, it is the same loyalty I will extend to him,” he stated.
