The idea of issuing national identification cards to Nigerians was mooted in 2001 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2003, large scale fraud was discovered in the project leading to the arraignment of three ministers. They were charged with corruption in connection with a $214m contract with SAGEM, a French firm, which was supposed to implement the project.

Those accused included former internal affairs minister Sunday Afolabi, Mohammed Shatta, a former minister of state in that ministry; and former labour minister Hussain Akwanga. Mr Afolabi died before the case was concluded and since then none of those charged have been prosecuted and the charges were subsequently dropped. The project went on and was executed haphazardly.

A LOT OF OUR FELLOW NIGERIANS TRAVELLING THROUGH LAND/WATER GOT LOST OF DIE ON D WAY TO EUROPE OR WHEREVER DEY WERE GOING, AND THEIR BODIES HAVE BEEN MISPLACED DUE TO D FACT DAT DIS OUTSIDE COUNTRIES OR PEOPLE COULD NOT IDENTIFY DEM. I BELIEVE DIS NEW CARDS & D PERSONAL NUMBER ASSIGNED TO EVERY ONE IS LIKE A SS# (SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER - U.S.A) DAT 'LL ENABLE NIGERIANS TO B IDENTIFIED WHETHER ALIVE OR DEAD WHEREVER DEY MAYBE. . . . . . . GOOD STEP FORWARD.

Yep.

At least the first step to fight curruption and insecurity" After the registration I will advise the presidency to mandate every parastatals in the country to impliment it in every transactions i.e bank, light, mobile phones & water, elections, immigrations & customs, car purchasing & registrations, including schools, census, infact every thing in the country by this way we will know the bagoons that do eat from the sweat of monkeys.
