The once peaceful country of Ghana is fast losing its allure with violence steadily taking over its social and academic space.

In the latest incident, two students were left injured on December 17, after students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah halls of the University of Ghana at Legon, a suburb of Accra, were involved in a violent clash.

Properties belonging to both halls worth thousands of dollars were also destroyed during the clash.

Authorities of the university are yet to establish the actual cause of the clash.

But eyewitnesses said the students of Commonwealth hall descended on their colleagues from Mensah Sarbah hall in retaliation for the earlier beating up one of their colleagues for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
A team of police and military had to intervene to restore order to the campus.

There was a similar clash last academic year which resulted in the destruction of properties belonging to the University.

Crimes officer at the Legon Police Command ASP Basim Taley said investigations have begun into the incident.

He disclosed that one of the injured students has been treated and discharged from the hospital.

"The incident happened around 10:00pm (22hrs GMT) in the night but we are still investigating to come out with the cause. We have received conflicting information because each side is blaming the other so we don’t want to rush into conclusions. It was the Dean of Students who called the police and we went in to calm the situation. Students of Commonwealth Hall were those who came to Sarbah Hall and then Sarbah Hall also organised and fought back. That is what led to the commotion. So that is what I can say for now” he said.
