Jos and Bukuru metropolis in Plateau State were under siege on Monday as rival armed youths completely took over the two cities.

Residents of the two areas could not sleep the whole of Sunday night as sporadic gun shots rent the air up till Monday morning, our correspondent reports.

Activities were paralysed in Jos metropolis as all shops and business places remained closed. Igbo traders abandoned their shops in protest at the alleged killing of their kinsmen at Dilimi Market by some Muslim youths.

Most residents of Jos observed a compulsory vigil on Sunday night as a result of rumours that some people were planning to launch an attack on some parts of the city. Rival armed youths were said to have exchanged gunfire but the STF intervened and drove them away.

Residents of Angwan Rukuba, Nasarawa Gwong, Tina Junction, Bauchi Road, Zaria Road, Ferin Gada and Gada Biu areas in Jos North and Bukuru, Angwan Doki, Rayfied and Kwata in Jos South remained indoors on Monday.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Gregory Yenlong, told THE PUNCH that the state government was not helpless.

“We are just taking our time and liaising with all the security agents to know the best way of restoring normalcy. In this kind of situation, you have to weigh all options and the security implications before coming out with any measure,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Special Task Force has moved in to stem the burning of houses that started since Sunday morning. More soldiers have been moved to mosques and Muslim-dominated areas by the STF to avoid reprisal attacks following the alleged killing of Igbo traders by some Muslim youths at Dilimi.

Spokesman of the STF, Capt. Charles Ekeocha, told our correspondent that soldiers were taking precautionary measures to avoid casualties.

The STF also arrested four persons with various types of weapons at Agwan-Doki and Kwata areas of Jos South Local Government on Sunday.

Briefing newsmen in Jos on Monday, Ekeocha said the suspects were apprehended during Sunday’s violence in the city.

The STF spokesman said the weapons recovered were two pistols with their magazines, one locally made single barrel, one Russian double barrel, nine knives, 10 empty cartridges, 31 empty cases of 7.62mm, seven empty cases of 7.62mm, seven empty cases of 7.62 mm (special) and other sizes of ammunition.
