Two goals from Peter Odemwingie, taking his total for the season to eight, enabled West Brom to halt an alarming sequence of six successive defeats and prove that Blackpool are not quite the miracle workers of popular belief.

Both these teams seem to regard attack as the best form of defence so, to no great surprise, it was an unusually open, thoroughly entertaining game. As is their pleasing custom, Blackpool played with three up front, and nearly had their enterprise rewarded after only 67 seconds, when DJ Campbell was inches the wrong side of Boaz Myhill’s right-hand post after shooting on the turn from near the penalty spot.
