The Imo State Police Command has smashed a gang of alleged skidnappers in Mboke village in Ihiagwa, Owerri West Local Government Area. Five persons were, however, killed during the exchange of fire that ensued when the police operatives stormed the kidnappers’ hideout.
Parading four of the kidnap suspects who were arrested and the corpses of the five killed, the State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Maishanu, said on February 22, 2011, the gang kidnapped one Mrs. Nzeribe Obianuju at Ekwema Crescent, Owerri, and whisked her away to unknown destination. Three days after, the men of the command acted on a tip-off, which led to the safe rescue of the victim.
Maishanu, who spoke through the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, noted that the difficult terrain leading to their hideout made it possible for a couple of them to escape.
Mr. Nwaiwu disclosed that the sum of N737, 250 being the last ransom paid to the kidnappers by one of the kidnapped victims, was recovered. He gave the names of those arrested as Kingsely Frank, Endurance Johnson, Itoro Samson and Kwame Akpa.
The Police PRO said investigation had commenced to ascertain the correct identities of those killed in the operation.
According to him, the breakthrough came barley two days after five suspected kidnappers were arrested for the kidnap of an 80-year-old woman, one Mrs. Salomia Ndu, of Obodoujiji Ahiazu Mbaise, and the sum of N1.5 million collected from the victim’s son as ransom recovered.
He assured the natives of the state that the command was doing everything within the ambits of the law to ensure that the renewed war against kidnapping in the state was sustained. He called on the public to continue to volunteer information that will aid their operations in the state.
