Residents of Alimosho in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, have raised the alarm over incessant robberies in the area.

A resident, who identified herself as Joyce Okon, on Tuesday said that since the beginning of the year, residents have been sleeping with their one eye opened.

Particularly, she said that the areas mostly affected were Alimosho Road and adjoining streets.

She said that the landlords’ association, worried by the torrents of gunshot sounds, especially at nights, had decided to erect gates at some specific black spots to check the ugly trend.

Okon said, “It can be horrifying at night between 1am and 3am. People are forced to wake up from their sleep due to booming of guns. The situation makes everyone feels insecure. At times, they start shooting at 1am.

“Recently, our landlords’ association has asked each house to pay N5,000 to procure gates to secure the areas with the belief that the night madness will abate.”

She said that they usually notified the police each time robbers invaded the area, adding that police used to come around, blaring their sirens to scare away the robbers, but the situation still persisted.

Okon said, “How long shall we continue to live with this menace? To sleep at night has become an unpleasant experience.

“It is horrendous! I appeal to the police authorities to intensify regular surveillance of the areas to send message to the gangsters that it is longer business as usual.”

Another resident, who declined to disclose his name for security reason, said that the robbers were kings of the areas at night.

Another resident, Cosmas Okorie, said he always kept vigil as soon as it was night in his house.

Okorie said, “Our area is seriously under siege of robbers. In the past, robbers had wreaked havoc. They had gone to houses to rob and rape innocent girls.

“Now, the same scenario is here with us. We need help urgently. My family has been disturbing me for us to relocate from the area”

Okorie said that the entire area was under siege, adding that it appeared as if there was no government presence in the area.

Reacting to the complaints, the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, confirmed the development to PUNCH METRO on the telephone.

He said the police had received the complaints and that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Yakubu Alkali, had directed that the area be properly policed.

“Many plain-clothes policemen have been deployed in the areas to fish out the criminals,” Jinadu said.
