Parading the suspects to newsmen in his office at the Federal Secretariat, Maiduguri, on Monday, the Comptroller of Immigration, Borno State Command, Alhaji Babayo Alkali, said that the suspects were apprehended by his men trying to cross over to Libya en route Cameroun.
He said, “the suspects in our hands today intended to travel to Libya by road through Cameroun and Chad Republic. Four of them have international e-passports but none possesses any visa or employment papers.”
The comptroller said their interrogations revealed that Chinyere Nwafor, with passport number AO2722637, was the trafficker, while Ochomgba Anthony Erochukwu; Nwazuzu Ogechi Martins; Genevive Otour Otuorgh; Anthony Unmunnakwu and Ifeoma Mike were being trafficked to the North African country.
He said all the five suspects would be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) for further investigations and prosecution.
Asked whether she was aware of the dangers inherent in travelling across the desert, the trafficker, Chinyere Nwafor said: “I have never heard of any danger poised by travelling across the desert. I have been living in Libya for six years and I always buy my foodstuffs in Nigeria. Even now our vehicle is loaded with foodstuff.”
Nwafor, who broke down in tears, also said that she found nothing wrong in assisting those who wanted to go to Libya to join their relatives.
On the ongoing crisis in Libya, Nwafor said it did not affect the area she lived and those travelling with her would not face any danger during their stay in Libya.
One of the victims, Ifeoma Mike, 18, who said both her parents were dead, claimed that she was accompanying the trafficker to Libya to assist her in her restaurant business.
