In Abuja High Court Judge, Justice Ajoke Adepoju, yesterday summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Hafiz Ringim, to explain why he should not be jailed over flagrant disobedience to court orders.

The summon is contained in a Form 49 order entitled: “Notice to show cause why an order of committal should not be made against you”. The summon was obtained by reporters.

It reads: “Take notice that the applicant will on March 21 at the hour of 9:00 am apply to this court for an order for your committal to prison, for having disobeyed the order of this court made on February 28, requiring you to release the applicant unconditionally from your custody and also to pay the applicant the sum of N10m for the wrongful arrest, detention, humiliation and trauma occasioned by your illegal acts.

“And take notice that you are hereby required to attend the court on the first day to show cause why an order for committal should not be made.”

The Judge had threatened to send the IGP to prison for failing to produce a suspect, Dahiru Yakubu Aliyu in court, despite a court order.

The suspect has since January 7, been in detention at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Area 10, Abuja without being charged to any court of competent jurisdiction.

The IG and two of his subordinates; Commissioner of Police in-charge of Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and Audu Abel, a Chief Superintendent of Police were alleged to have disobeyed four different court orders served on August 9, 12, 18 and 20, 2010.
