There was tension and pandemonium yesterday at Oba community in Idemili Council area of Anambra State, following the shooting to death of a youth by the police. Youths of the area went on the rampage, resulting in the death of another victim.

The youths took to the streets setting bonfires, burnt a police patrol vehicle and attempted to torch   a police post at a neighbouring town, Ichi, in Ekwusigo council area of the state, it was learnt.
For several hours, movement along the Oba-Nnewi Road and the Onitsha-Owerri Road was impossible as the rampaging youths blocked all the roads and set bonfire on them.

According to sources, the incident, which occurred about 7.00am recorded the second casualty when the police reinforced and shot sporadically into the air to scare the irate youths from setting ablaze the police station, adding that in the process a stray bullet hit and killed a commercial motorcyclist who was at the scene of the protest.

The sources further stated that the first victim, simply identified as Ogalanya, was shot in his home when he tried to run away from a police team, which was said to have come to effect his arrest.
Unconfirmed sources said the victim was an Indian hemp seller.
It was gathered that during the protest, vehicular movement was prevented for several hours because of the heavy bonfires along the road.  The leader of the youths in the community, Mr. Dozie Nweke condemned the incident but urged the youths to remain calm as dialogue remained the best option in conflict resolution.

He said the police action on the victim seemed premeditated, especially on the circumstances leading to the killing, wondering why the police should open fire on an unarmed person.  A community leader, who spoke to newsmen, insisted that the police should undergo psychiatric tests before they were posted, adding that similar extra judicial killings had been swept under the carpet in the past.

According to him, no body has the right to take another person’s life, adding that murder was forbidden by God, man and the law.  But the Police Spokesman in the State, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, who confirmed the incident, said it was accidental.
