THE Ogun State governor, Chief Gbenga Daniel, has said that he will not support the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the forthcoming elections. This is just as he said that the forefathers of those who said he would be jailed would be the ones to be sent to prison.

He also said that the PDP had become a shadow of itself based on the lingering crisis that engulfed it in the last two and a half years.

Daniel said this, on Thursday, during the disbursement of N50 million grants-in-aid to over 600 community development associations (CDAs) in the state for various self-help projects.

Daniel also said he would not support the party in the state in the forthcoming elections, alleging that the party primaries conducted and supervised by the national officers of the party and other stakeholders were upturned “overnight.”

“The PDP that you hear about in Ogun State has become a shadow of itself and as somebody well brought up, there is no way I can afford to support the PDP in the state.

“The PDP of today where you conduct primaries in the open and some people changed the process through the backdoor, that cannot be a party I would associate with.”

He also dismissed the allegation that he was using public funds to sponsor a particular party, describing it as baseless and frivolous.

“We are at a crucial point. They alleged that I want to use public funds to do politics; let me tell you that I am not using public funds to do politics and I challenge anybody. Instead of telling lies all over the place, if anybody is aware of one kobo of Ogun State money that is missing anywhere, I challenge them to publish it publicly or forever hold their peace.

“I repeat it, if anybody is aware of one kobo of Ogun State that this governor has touched illegally, he should mention it, he should say it, they should say where the account is or forever hold their peace,” Daniel added.

He also described as empty threat, a statement credited to the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP, Chief Adetunji Olurin, that he (Olurin) would jail him after the expiration of his tenure.

“The person they chose as their candidate said he would send the governor (me) to jail. I asked myself: is this the kind of government you want to run? You have not been elected yet, you are threatening somebody that has performed with jail without any justification.

“Their forefathers will go to jail. If I have worked tirelessly to develop Ogun State in eight years, their forefathers will go to jail. You would observe that your governor has not spoken like this before, but if one ought to speak out, one should speak out,” Daniel added.

He said desperate politicians had continued to malign his character to score cheap political points, adding that “by the special grace of God, in about two months and few days, we will be handing over to a new government in Ogun State and, on that occasion, it will be exactly eight years that I have mounted the saddle of leadership.

“I think I must thank God that history is being written that I remain the longest serving governor of Ogun State. All of these could not have happened without the active support of all of you.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) in the state has said it has uncovered a plot by chieftains of the state chapter of the PDP to secure the disqualification of its gubernatorial candidate, Gboyega Isiaka and others, through the judiciary.

It described the move as an attempt to subvert democracy in the nation, using the state as a starting point.

The party, therefore, alerted President Goodluck Jonathan, the Chief Justice of the Federation, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), as well as the National Assembly, to the move and charged them not to allow “a tiny band of opportunists and desperadoes to truncate democracy and cause unending crisis” in the state.

It warned that the plot, if successful, would spark a major crisis ahead of the April general election.

Speaking through its publicity secretary, Mr Raheem Ajayi, in a release signed by him and made available to the Nigerian Tribune, the party raised the alarm that the clandestine move had been revealed by a suit to stop its candidates, filed in an Abuja Federal High Court.
