His regret is coming after he confessed to killing his brother in-law, Basil Ogbonaya in his apartment on March 1.
Mr. Okafor stated that his brother in-law had come to visit him at his number 17, Omoaile Street, Ejigbo residence that fateful day but an argument ensued between them which led to the death of Mr. Ogbonaya.
The regret
"I regret what happened and I want people to learn from me, now I am in a cell, and my life means nothing again. What happened that day was that Basil and I have been very good friends and he was married to my younger sister. Basil owed me ₦1.5m. I have a boutique and he collected the money to invest in his foodstuff business since September last year. Basil promised to pay that money back in December 2010 but when I went to ask for my money, he said he did not have it, I even had to borrow money from people to get married in December because Basil refused to pay me my money." He said.
Mr. Okafor narrated how an argument led to a physical brawl.
"That day, he came to my house about 6.00pm and I asked him for my money, he annoyed me by saying how much is the money that I will not allow him to rest. So we had a heated argument and it was Basil that went to the kitchen and brought out cutlass, he wanted to hit me with it but I dodged and collected it from him and slashed him on the head." Mr. Okafor said.
The cover up
Mr. Basil reportedly died on the spot and in a bid to keep his gruesome murder a secret, Mr. Okafor stacked his corpse in a plastic container and dumped it by the roadside far away from the scene of the crime.
"I did it out of fear; I did not want anybody to know that I killed him in my house so I went to deposit his corpse far away so that it will not be traced to me. I waited until it was very early the next day, so I dragged his corpse into the container and I managed to put the container in the back seat of my Benz 190 car, I drove to a quiet place on the Ejigbo express close to NNPC and I rolled the container out of my car and dumped it by the roadside." Mr. Okafor said.
Police officers from the Ejigbo police station arrested Mr. Okafor following evidence provided by Uzoma, Mr. Ogbonaya‘s wife that her brother (Mr. Okafor) killed her husband.
"I was suspicious, I went to my brother's house when my husband did not come back to look for him because my husband called me that he was in Okafor's house to collect his N3.4million, it was Okafor that is owing my husband money and he lied when he said otherwise. My husband went to collect his money and Okafor ended up killing him and dumping his corpse by the roadside. I went to his house and I found blood stains on my husband's handkerchief and on the pillow, so I secretly removed them and took them to the Ejigbo police station." Mrs Ogbonaya said.
Based on the evidence, the police arrested Mr. Okafor. He confessed to the crime and told officers where he dumped the corpse.
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department at Panti, Yaba for discreet investigation.
The police spokesperson, Samuel Jinadu said Mr. Ogbonaya's corpse has been deposited in a public mortuary for autopsy and the suspect will be charged to court.
Mr. Okafor appealed to his family to forgive him for his dastardly act.
"I just got married in December and my wife is yet to move to my house and now this has happened. I pray that she forgives me and my entire family too, I want my sister to forgive me for killing her husband. I I have submitted my life to God and I regret my actions, people should learn from me and should not take law into their hands." Mr. Okafor said.
