Suspected leader of a notorious armed robbery gang have been arrested by the police detectives attached to Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, with a bag containing assorted firearms and ammunition.
The middle aged suspect identified as Mary Onwuka, was arrested at the Ogboju Motor Park along the Badagry Expressway trying to board a Delta bound bus for an operation in Koko area of the state.
The suspect, a resident of No 48 Uzor Street, Ajegunle, was reportedly arrested when her luggage was searched as is the normal routine.
THISDAY learnt that she initially refused the search and even went as far as attempting to bribe the man loading the bus. But he refused and insisted on searching the bag.
Not about to give up, the suspect tried to smuggle the bag into the bus but the same loader saw her and then forcefully collected the bag for searching.
According to police sources, the passengers and workers at the motor park was shocked at the discovery of the arms when the search was eventually conducted.
The bag, THISDAY gathered contained one AK-47 riffle with No. 354979, one AK- 49 riffle with No. 560139, one K2 riffle with No. 301525, eight magazines and 158 live ammunition.
The driver of the bus raised an alarm that attracted officials from Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) who arrested her and handed her over to the police.
The suspect has since confessed to being a member of a dangerous robbery gang adding that the weapons were for an operation to be carried out in Warri the following night.
Police operatives said her confession has led to the arrest of another member of the gang one Godwin Adams while efforts are in top gear to track down the other gang members.
