President Goodluck Jonathan has described the National Youth Service Corps members who lost their lives in the Suleja bomb attack on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office as martyrs.

Also, one person was killed at Twon Brass in Brass local government area of Bayelsa State during the National Assembly polls.

Dr. Jonathan who spoke to newsmen at his Otuoke hometown shortly after casting his vote described the death of the ten corps members as unfortunate.

“It was unfortunate, the incident we had in Suleja but was an isolated case. We regret the loss of between nine and ten youth corps members. Government will see what we will do for the bereaved families. The victims died as martyrs while serving their father land. We will soon recognise them,” President Jonathan noted.

The perpetrators of the heinous act, according to him, are anti social elements that wanted to derail the conduct of the polls, declaring that they would not succeed.

While expressing his sympathy for the corps members he said, “We sympathise with them but they should know that is the hazards we all face everyday while doing our work.

“The number of security agencies, journalists and others faces the kind of risk, so you should not run away from your civic responsibility as a Nigerian whether you are a youth corper or security agents, we all face the same hazard, if the police and others withdraw because of one or two ugly situation, nobody will do it,” he said adding that government would encourage them to do their job.

He assured that no stone will be left unturned in fishing out the perpetrators of the heinous act.

On the conduct of the election, President Jonathan said the turn out was encouraging, assuring that subsequent would be smooth just as he insisted that every vote must count.

The President asked whether journalists present at the polling centre have performed their civic responsibility, advising them to do so.

President Jonathan cast his vote alongside his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan and aged mother at about 12:33pm.

Meanwhile, one person was reportedly killed at Twon Brass in the Brass local government local area of Bayelsa State while several others were injured.

Though the identity of the deceased could not be immediately ascertained sources told Sunday Vanguard that there was a violent clash between PDP and Labour Party supporters and that an attempt by security operatives to quell the riotous situation led to the death of the youth.

Confirming the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, Adenrele Shinaba said it was inter parties clash, adding we heard that one person was shot dead in Brass area of the state.

Aside the reported death at Brass, the exercise was generally peaceful in most part of the upland areas of the state.

In Yenagoa it was a peaceful poll but materials did not get to some of the communities on time.

At Otuasega in Ogbia council area, some electorate protested the omission of their names from the voters register with a plea on INEC to rectify the situation before the conduct of subsequent election.

Specifically, the New Layout polling unit in ward 6, out of the 581 voters on the register only three hundred and twenty names were made available at the unit with the result that many could not find their names.

In the riverine area of Ekeremor, it was learnt that electoral materials were hijacked and diverted to unknown destination prompting the electoral officer one Idamabo Adetonye to report the matter to the INEC and Joint Task Force.

At Fonibiri, Korokorosei and Amassoma in the Southern Ijaw council, sources from the area told Sunday Vanguard that the election materials meant for the zone were hijacked by unknown persons.
