The committee set up by the Niger state government to assess the extent of damage during the last protest in Minna, Bida and Kompani Bobi on Friday confirmed that 17 churches were burnt by the protesters while five lives were lost.
One of those who died, according to the chairman of the committee, Dr Jibrin Kolo Saba, was burnt to death while looting the house of a pastor.
Dr Saba, during a news conference in Minna, said that the committee which commenced its assignment on Thursday evening, also discovered that a number of cars, private buildings and property including the centenary roundabout constructed by the government at the Kpakungu roundabout were destroyed during the protest.
According to him, a number of people yet to be identified were still in public and private hospitals receiving treatment for injuries they sustained during the disturbance.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, Dr Saba said, “what we saw was sad. why should such destruction take place, it is sad to see such a thing happen.
“What touched us most was the corpers lodge. it is sad that human beings could do such a terrible thing to fellow human beings.
“If this violence is allowed to continue the way it has been, it will threaten the corporate existence of this state and the country,” he said.
According to Dr Saba, from the information so far available to the committee, the act was carried out by young boys or youths who are jobless and capitalise on issues to cause chaos.”
He said the eight-man committee had been split into two to enable it complete its assignment on time and submit a report to the government
