As a citizen of Nigeria I feel the need to lend my voice to the current situation in the country especially the aftermath of the 2011 Presidential Election.
So far, the series of events that trailed the declaration of President Goodluck Jonathan as the winner of the election as revealed the fragmented nature of our so called nation. We only exist as a nation by geography but diametrically opposed as a people, with ethnocentrism and religious bigotry the norm of time.
Our problems stated in 1914 when Lord Luggard (for whatsoever reason) forcefully fused the Southern and Northern protectorates into ‘an unholy and unstable wedlock,’ which we find, bequeathed unto us today. The coerced marriage has never consummated even after almost a century of trying to feign a great union. It is unfortunate that we have been shying away in discussing this union which has never really brought us together, we still in our conscious mind know who our ‘real’ brother s are, I believe now is the right time and atmosphere to really discuss this brotherhood called Nigeria, devoid of sentiments and emotions.

I believe we should begin by running a ‘loosed’ federation with emphasis on REGIONAL Governments. God and nature have been kind to us by perfectly demarcating different regions geographically and tribally. Each region should be autonomous and control and develop her resources. We can cohabitate through inter-marriage, trade, sports, technology e.t.c.  I’m very positive that the spate of developments in each region will be tremendous though disproportionate, and our endemic national vice of corruption will be greatly subdued if not eliminated. We can still exist as a nation Nigeria in the international map and military might to keep away external aggression.
Also, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme has outlived its purpose and somehow outdated and old-fashion. The purpose of establishing the NYSC I believe is to establish mutual trust and respect amongst different ethnic groups and tribes in the country after the unfortunate civil war of the late sixties. Though, then it seemed to be a laudable project which to me was able to fulfill the set objectives till around mid- eighties. I believe this scheme should have been aborted or redesigned to take a new look but it’s unfortunate that we’ve had selfish and self-centered policy makers till date (furniture allowance, perpetual tenure of office, over bloated allowances and salaries e.t.c, I’ll leave this for another day).
The NYSC scheme should focus more on entrepreneurial training since we don’t learn that in the higher institutions, our institutions turn out graduates waiting for employment instead of graduates skilled in becoming employers of labour. I think the scheme should cover like 3-6 months of entrepreneurship trainings conducted in different zones in the country. Upon completion of the training, a specialized Trust Fund should be held and disbursed to those graduates that have project proposals that could contribute to the economy and fight poverty, with this those who will actually be going for paid employment will be drastically reduced and unemployment rate will surely reduced exponentially with time, then we can now compete with economically viable nations.
