Chairman of South-east Governors’ Forum and the Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi has said there was no negotiation for political positions with anybody before the general elections. Obi said in Onitsha over the weekend that neither the Governors’ Forum nor his political party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) negotiated for political positions with President Goodluck Jonathan before giving him a blanket support in the 2011 presidential election.

Instead, the Forum and APGA, he noted resolved to give support to any presidential candidate who has the best of Igbo interest in his programme. The governor said: “The struggle for political positions is the responsibility of the PDP members from the South-east who ought to raise questions concerning what comes to their zone.”

From the recent zoning formula of the PDP, the South-east could not secure any of the plum positions of the speaker of the House of Representatives or the president of the Senate despite the overwhelming support it gave Jonathan and the PDP in the presidential election.
But trying to exonerate the Governors’ Forum and APGA from the losses of the zone, Obi said: “There are two things there, the South-east governors of which I am the chairman categorically stated that they were not running for the office of the president or office of the vice president and that remains sacrosanct.

“Two, we said we will support any candidate with the best interest of the region. I am not of the PDP. I support the president. What we expect from the president are those things he will do for the masses of Igbo land, such as the second Niger Bridge, fighting of erosion and making Enugu Airport an international airport.
“The job of who gets what position is for the PDP. It is left for PDP from this area to ask what is our own. The time to blame us is when the president fails to deliver on our expectations. They are two different things. We negotiated for what will benefit the masses, what President Jonathan will do for Igbo man within four years of his tenure.”

Furthermore, Obi stressed that it would “be a big relief the day international flight lands at Enugu airport, because that will change everything. The second Niger Bridge will open up trade and working on the erosion sites in the South-east is important, otherwise we will be wiped away.”
He, however, noted that the ability for each ethnic group to get what belongs to them depends greatly on their ability to come together.
He urged Ndigbo to do the first thing first by coming together, love one another and see realities.
