The man, whose name was given as Mr. Adebayo Ogbolu, and his wife, Florence, were said to have died in quick succession after drinking local herb said to have the capacity to cure rheumatism.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state command, Mr. Aremu Adeniran, confirmed the development.
He said the couple consulted an unorthodox medical practitioner, identified as Tijani Yusuf, to prepare the herb .
A source at Ifesowapo Street where the deceased lived before their death, said Ogbolu had been suffering from rheumatism in the last 10 years.
He added that Florence, who only drank part of the herb for prevention purpose, first complained of stomach pain and died some minutes after.
The source said her husband raised the alarm which attracted their neighbours to their apartment.
He said the neighbours, who met him complaining of stomach upset, arranged a vehicle to rush him to a nearby hospital.
But Ogbolu could not make it to the hospital as he died on the way.
Their corpses were deposited at the state General Hospital at Itaogbolu for autopsy.
The spokesman of the state Police command said Yusuf had been arrested and the case transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for investigation.
He also said the result of the autopsy would be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution in the state for necessary legal advice.
Adeniran advised members of the public to refrain from arbitrary consumption of drugs.
