Women and children migrate from Maiduguri

A pregnant woman, Hajiya Yakaka Abubakar, was shot dead on Tuesday night gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram in Bulabulim Ngarnam in Maiduguri.

Relatives of the deceased told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that Abubakar was killed while trying to protect her husband from being shot by assailants.

Malam Babakura Ibrahim an in-law of the deceased pointed out that that the gunmen invaded the residence in search of the husband Malam Abubakar Ibrahim.

``At about 9.30 p.m. about three strange persons invaded the area, so individuals started making contact with the police to inform them of the suspicious movements.

``But within a short period they broke into the house and shot my brother in the chest and his right hand,'' Ibrahim said.

He said that the wife who was seven month pregnant bounced on one of the attackers from behind and tried to dispossess him of his gun.

``It was in the process of trying to wrestle the gun from him that his colleagues shot her in the stomach severally at close range.

`And she died shortly after being rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for help,'' he said.

Ibrahim said the husband, a staff of Stanbic IBTC Bank was receiving treatment at the hospital.

Ibrahim said the husband, a staff of Stanbic IBTC Bank was receiving treatment at the hospital.

``The husband is currently receiving treatment at the UMTH, while the remains of Yakaka has been buried at the Gwange Cemetry,'' he said.

Ibrahim added, however, that the gunmen were surprised when they learnt that the man they shot was not a lawyer but a banker.

``The gunmen were surprised to learn that my brother was not a lawyer but a banker. ``In fact they pleaded with one of his neighbours to carry both of them to hospital so as to save their lives,'' he said.

NAN also learnt that the gunmen had shot a politician, Alhaji Isa Marbuba, at his residence in Bulabulim Alajeri before heading to the banker's house.

A lawyer, Malam Modu Denjami, was killed on Aug. 16 at his residence in the area by unknown gunmen.

Lt. Col. Hassan Mohammed, the spokesman of the Joint Task Force on Operation Restore Order said he was yet to get proper briefing on the matter when contacted.

``We have just dispatched somebody to the place to get the exact information. We will get in touch as soon as he comes back,'' Mohammed said.

But a senior police officer confirmed the story saying that the continued killings by unknown persons in the state was a source of concern to security agencies in the country
