The couple, with four children, the oldest, a university undergraduate, said they hailed from Isiala Ngwa in Abia State.
Mrs. Iroegbu was alleged to have sponsored the kidnap of one Miss Victoria Obinasim, of 7, Amefula Street, Brass Junction, Aba, in July, following a disagreement between them. Obinasim was said to have served in her Care Centre.
Iroegbu, 54, said he was an ordained pastor of a pentecostal church, while his wife, Peace, who also claims to be a woman of God, owns a care home, Love of Christ Sisters’ Care Centre, at 36, Timber Street, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where Peace said they relocated to from Aba.
Soldiers of Operation Jubilee who arrested them alleged that the centre was being used for child trafficking. They alleged that Mrs. Peace Iroegbu “has been in the business of selling children since 2006.”
Two children she allegedly sold recently were recovered and were seen on the Asa premises of the task force. The children were recovered following a raid by the soldiers on the Oyigbo Care Centre of the couple following a tip-off by an aggrieved mother.
The soldiers claimed that children delivered by young girls with unwanted pregnancies were sold to buyers at the Care Centre. Some of the babies have been recovered and the soldiers said more would be recovered as the “suspect is now cooperating with investigators to recover the sold children.”
