Manchester United moved
through to the fourth round of
the Carling Cup after a
comfortable 3-0 win over rivals
Leeds at Elland Road.
Sir Alex Ferguson fielded a
second-string squad for
Tuesday's clash, but two familiar
names did the damage on the
scoresheet for the Red Devils.
A first-half brace from Michel
Owen put United in control
before veteran winger Ryan
Giggs made it 3-0 just before
the interval.
The third goal was a moment of
brilliance from Giggs, with the
37-year-old threading the ball
through his marker's legs before
firing a shot that took a
deflection and flew past Andy
Lonergan in the Leeds goal.
United striker Danny Welbeck
came on for the last 20 minutes
in his first action since suffering
a hamstring injury in United's
8-2 win over Arsenal last month,
while 18-year-old Paul Pogba
made his debut.
Arsenal went a goal down to
League Two side Shrewsbury
Town before responding
strongly for a 3-1 win at
Emirates Stadium.
The visitors went ahead thanks
to a James Collins goal after 16
minutes, but Arsenal hit back
through Kieran Gibbs, Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain and Yossi
Benayoun's first strike for his
