The Dutchman is the Catalan side's latest player to move to the infirmary after picking up a serious knee injury during training and may miss a majority of the campaign.

Barcelona has received some unwelcome news from the treatment room as Ibrahim Afellay is facing six months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The Netherlands international had only recently recovered from a hamstring problem sustained in preseason which saw him miss several weeks of action.

Afellay, an unused substitute in Wednesday's 2-2 draw at Valencia, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Thursday's training session and is expected to be able to return only in April.

The 25-year-old, who moved to the Camp Nou in January, will have to go under the knife to fix the problem, with the Catalan side due to disclose more information regarding the surgery on Friday.

He joins Andres Iniesta and Alexis Sanchez on Barcelona's list of injured players.
