Residents of Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Tuesday called on the state government to stop the Oro festival in the area.

The residents, who spoke to News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, said the celebration hinders their movement and affects the economy of the area.

NAN reported that the residents were reacting to the restriction of movement because of Oro celebration on Monday at Igbogbo, a suburb of Ikorodu.

A businesswoman, Mrs. Olayemi Bamgbade, told NAN that she had experienced the restrictions for 15 years.

She said, “We urge the government to put a stop to this Oro tradition. If government does not cancel it, they should restrict the event to midnight.

“We residents are at the receiving end of this saga.”

She said the tradition was a violation of the fundamental human rights of the residents.

An accountant, Mr. Tony Iruah, said the tradition was frustrating to his family.

Mrs. Iyabo Olofin, a hair dresser in Ikorodu, said the tradition had become a source of worry for the residents, adding that it was unfair for the government to allow it to go on.

She noted that the continued observance of the tradition by its adherents gives the impression that the country was tilting towards barbarism.

“It is so sad that in spite of the level of civilisation globally, we still condone some archaic and barbaric traditions that ought to be extinct,” she said.

A clergyman, Mr. Emmanuel Obasa, said any religious or traditional festival that infringed on people’s freedom of movement was bad and unlawful.

the worst aspect of the so called oro festival that some people are claiming to be a tradition is nothing but a festival of rituals with human blood. i am sure that a lot of people knows about this even our prominent yoruba pastors but they have all refused to say anything about it and believe you me that GOD will ask from their hand the bood of those innocent people since they have all failed or refused to speak out against it. i live in ojo, sabo, ajamgbadi and shibiri for years and i know exactly what i am talking about. i know about 3 to 4 people that lost their lives to that satanic culture and tradition. i  almost got killed by this evil people under the guise of tradition or culture in 2005 the night that i have to stay up to 2 am on the hold up between barraks and volks due to the break down of dangote lorry along badagry express and there is no how i would have left my car on the road,so i had to wait until i was able to pass through the hold up only for me to almost lost my life if not by the special grace of GOD. while i was trying to reverse my car in other escape from them i saw about 3 to 4 people that also pass through the hold up that was already in bound and they never return up till today.anybody that lived any where around those areas that i mentioned would attest to what i am saying because they are open and known fact among the residence of those areas more especially those that lived up 5 years around those areas in 2001 to 2005 when i had to pack out of that area after that incident and i heard that the situations are worst than that in badagry, ikorodu and other areas where they have more yoruba concentrations. between 2001 to 2003 those that lived in sabo oniba ajangbadi would recall the incidence at cele, peoples, sabo bustop where a car was seen in the morning in the front a filing station with blood stains every where without the occupant after they ran into the oro cult the previous night, we heard them screaming at night for help before they finally stoped shouting which means that they must have been killed when people stoped hearing their voices.pls for goodness sake why must we still be practicing this kind of evil and barbaric tradition in this 21 century when other countries are advancing techonolicaly?.if the case is like this in lagos state what would be happening in other state where there is no much population of strangers and urban or city life. oro is nothing but a dangerous and blood sucking cult.it is not a tradition that would see the light of the day in this morden society,i am very sure that some truthful yorubas will agree with me because what i am saying is nothing but the truth.in early 2000 there was this pregnant woman that was in labour at that night in ilogbo ojo that was killed along side her husband just because she was being taking to the hospital at night during labour. it is high time that all well meaning nigerian and religious leaders in lagos state more especially the yorubas to rise up against this evil tradition. this kind of evil can not happen in a city like lagos and any developing area in the east without the christian revolting against it but here in lagos everybody have kept quite as if it is not their fellow human being that this wicked oro cultist are killing secrectly at night. it is eveil and a sin for any child of god more especialy the pastors,Revs and bishops to fold their hands and watch those that god have given to them to watch over their lives die in the hands of this evil men in the name a tradition.in okija anambra state a similar thing that is even small than what the oro cultist have been doing happened in 2004 and somebody raised an alarm and it stoped but in a lagos this evil have been happening for ages but not even our prominent yoruba pastors could say a word.the police and all the relevant authourities are aware of this but none of them have been able to stop this heinus crimes against humanity.the PHCN otherwise know as the NEPA are collabrating with them by always taking of the lights when ever there is this wicked, barbaric and muderous activities of the evil men in oro clothing.
i am not judging them but i am only condemning their silence in the face of this heinous evil that is an open secret to every lagosians.
i want those that know about this thing to open up and make a comment against this evil.

i expected you to say something more serious concerning the topic because we are the youth that should be in the fore front of change from the old evil ways of the so called cultures that negate the right to life and freedom in our community, town, state and tribe. if anything like oro is still happening any where within my community and even tribe that i know, i would be the first person to revolt  against it using the media and even mobilizing other people of like mind against because even if i am killed for doing that god and even posterity will remember me as long as this generation last.
what i am saying in that topic is a fact that is known by every real lagosian i mean real lagosians and not the jjc or those that lives in festac and the VGC where there is no bale s because all this rubbish happens where there is bales and obas but it baffles me that not even one prominent yoruba prominent pastors especially have ever said any thing about it.

Well it is very unfortunate that this kind of evil go on in some parts of this nation. Our government cannot act decisively for political reasons;fear of losing power or popularity. The truth is that most cities in the country by their composition (mixture of people resident in it and social, cultural and religious dispositions) makes it almost impossible for the abservance of traditonal festivals.Even though the constitution allows for freedom of worship and association, there is also repugnancy test for a cultural practice to be allowed in the present day Nigeria. This is that such culture or cultural practice must not be repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience as well as not be in violation of any law in force. This I know the oro festival do not satisfy.
