The U.S. Embassy and Consulate General issue the following emergency
message for U.S. citizens visiting or residing in Nigeria.

Although the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress
(TUC) suspended nationwide strikes to protest the end of the gasoline
subsidy on Monday, January 16, demonstrations continue in various cities
throughout Nigeria. Large demonstrations by civil society groups have
been called for Saturday, January 21 in Abuja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and
Lagos. Curfews are still in place in the cities of Gusau (Zamfara
State), Maiduguri (Borno State), Minna (Niger State), Potiskum (Yobe
State), and Yola (Adamawa State). The Embassy and Consulate General
received reports of demonstrations planned for the Unity Fountain in
Abuja and Freedom Square, Ojota, and Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos.

Even though the organizers of these events pledged to stage peaceful
protests, the potential exists for some events to become confrontational
and escalate into violence. Military personnel have been deployed to
Lagos as a result of ongoing demonstrations and teargas has reportedly
been used on protestors by authorities to control crowds. We urge U.S.
citizens to avoid the areas near protests and maintain low profiles.
U.S. citizens should monitor news reports regarding the location of
demonstrations. While shops, gas stations, and banks have reopened
across the country, long queues can be expected at most gas stations.

International and domestic air travel remains disrupted to a degree as a
result of the nationwide strike last week. As the situation is still
fluid, we advise U.S. citizens to confirm flight schedules directly with
airlines before you travel to the airport.

Please review your personal security plans, remain aware of your
surroundings, monitor local news stations for updates, and report
specific incidents of targeted violence to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or
the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos
