Not less than 19 people are feared killed yesterday during a failed bank robbery operation which occurred at  Ikom in  Cross River  State.

Eye witness said the killing was sequel to a gun fight between soldiers and armed bandits along Afikpo-Amasire axis towards Enugu-Port Harcourt highway.

The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, who made this known to reporters in Enugu yesterday, said the failed bank robbery incident occurred at about “1830 hours on Tuesday, January 24.”

Musa said the robbery operation caused the death of eight civilians and a policeman on duty, adding that  the robbers fled towards Ebonyi State in two  vehicles  through the  Ugep-Abomigbe Road.

The PRO added that military men who were  on routine patrol in Ebonyi State   intercepted the robbers around Afikpo-Amasire axis  towards Enugu-Port Harcourt highway. “One soldier died during the gun battle while two soldiers were wounded,’’ he said.

Musa also said nine armed robbers were killed during the gun battle, adding that six of them, managed to escape.

The items recovered from the robbers were  two RPG7 bombs, 28 empty magazines, two gas cylinders, 37 empty cases of 7.62 mm special ammunition, 22 live rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and two vehicles.
