10 killed in midnight raid

No fewer than ten people were reportedly killed when suspected armed Fulani men invaded three villages in Kufara community in Chikun Local Government area of Kaduna State Thursday night.A highly placed security source told Saturday Mirror that in the wake of the massacre security agencies have intensified search for about 300 Nigeriens, Chadians suspected to be terrorists who invaded the Southern part of Kaduna State.

Reports said the suspected armed Fulani herdsmen stormed the Kufara community at 10pm on Thursday night, killed and burnt houses including a church.Kufara is three kilometers away from Chikun Local Government headquarters, Kujama, which is about 45 minutes drive from Kaduna city.According to villagers who put a distress call to Saturday Mirror on condition of anonymity said “The Fulani men were over twenty in number, and they were all armed with AK47 guns. As I speak to you no dead bodies are taken to hospitals.”

He continued: “They came to the first village around 10pm yesterday. They started shooting and killing people. They burnt houses and moved to the next village.Again they started shooting and vandalizing properties. Then they moved to the next. There they went to the home of Pastor Innocent Chukwuemeka Mari, of Assemblies of God Church in Kufara. They killed him right in the presence of his wife and children. They shot the wife and left her for death. They also set the church on fire. They carried out the attacks until the early hours of this morning. Nobody challenged them”, he said.

According to him, “ten people were found dead, five were critically injured while several homes were burnt . The five people injured are in critical condition. They have all been moved to Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital, Shika, near Zaria” the source said.Kaduna State Police command Spokesman, Malam Aminu Lawal, in telephone interview with Saturday Mirror, confirmed the incident. “We got information about the incidence and our men have been drafted to the area but as I am talking to you now we are yet to get information from them because there is no network coverage in the area. We will keep you informed of any progress, ” he said.

The Southern parts of Kaduna in recent times have witnessed incessant killings by gunmen who operated under the disguise of hunters especially in Zonkuwa, Zango Kataf and other parts of the zone.
